Hi, I'm Jim Dika.  I've been repairing and troubleshooting computers in the Harbor Springs / Petoskey area for over 20 years.  I've kept up with the technology, and I'm still working daily to keep my customers happy with their computers, iPads, iPhones, and other techie gadgets.  I'm good with PCs and I'm good with Macs.  I'm good with other home electronics as well, such as TVs and home theatres.  I can run wires, and I can mount big screen TVs.

While I don't stock new computers, I do help my customers frequently with the purchase of new computers.  I'm regularly amazed at how much some people pay for equipment that they were talked into by some sales person.  Please be careful when you talk to someone who works on commission.  Maybe you should give me a call first.

I've seen a drastic decline recently in virus and malware problems.  This is a good thing.  I still recommend AVG Free as my favorite anti-virus program, and I still recommend keeping the extra toolbars and free junk off of your computer to keep it running at its best.

If your computer is giving you grief, I recommend considering a new computer, but sometimes the old computer is more familiar and less intimidating than learning a new computer.  Often it's more cost-effective to keep the old computer running.  While Windows 7 works great, Windows XP may still be a better choice for some people, and some computers.

If you have a new computer, maybe a visit from an expert will help to you get more comfortable more quickly with your new computer.  I can teach you some tricks, and I can answer your questions.

With the iPads and other gadgets out there, I'm seeing a need for help with upgrades and tech training.  Printing from an iPad is easy once it's set up and working correctly.

So if you're in need of training, or if you're having troubles with you computer or tech gadget, please give me a call.  Whether it's the Blue Screen of Death, or a crashed hard drive on your MacBook Pro, I'm here with the experience and expertise to fix the problems that computers run into.  Call me anytime, to ask a question, or to schedule an appointment, in-shop or on-site.

Jim's Three Rules for PCs

1. Keep Windows up-to-date.
2. Keep your anti-virus software up-to-date.
3. Update Adobe Flash & Reader, and Oracle's Java when prompted, but no free "stuff" that comes with these updates, including free toolbars. Less is more.

Computers are wonderful for storing data that you care about.  Photos of the kids are just an example of the many things you want to store, manage, use, and keep safe.  Make sure you burn a DVD every few months with your most treasured data. External hard drives are wonderful when used correctly, as are the online data backup sites.  Just be sure that you are backing up your data somewhere.  Call me if you need help.  I can set up a backup plan, and I can give you written instructions of how to properly back up your important data regularly.

One of my favorite uses of my home computers is recorded TV.  I use my main home computer as a TV and a DVR (Digital Video Recorder).  Using Windows Media Center software, I'm recording hockey games and other programs onto my computer's hard drive, then I'm watching the programs on any of my networked computers.  I can watch the beginning of a game while the end of the game is still being recorded, or I can take my laptop onto the porch to watch recorded shows there, without wires, and while fast-forwarding through the commercials.  With my Slingbox I can watch live TV on my computers anywhere in the world, if I'm connected to high-speed internet.  You can too!  I can come on-site to help you set up your home for remote viewing.  I can program your remotes, or I can pipe computer music to your home stereo.  I can teach you how to use all of the technology in your home that you're struggling with.  I'll document everything with detailed instructions, just in case you forget.  Give me a call today and let me help you turn your home into a high-tech home.

Online backup is one way of saving your important data to a safe
place.  SOS Online is the winner of 4 Editor's Choice
awards from PC Magazine.  If you try it here they
will send me money, so please give it a try. ==>

I'm still recommending Dell because it's
a great company with a great product.  HP is the
other "value line" that I like to recommend, but
Dell is still my favorite computer company.

Apple's iPads, iPods, iPhone, Macbooks, and iMacs exemplify
superior quality and design.  Macs cost more, and do less,
but they work better, with no viruses.  The "feel" can't be beat.
